2008 Winter Solstice Contest Guidelines

Second Annual Contest
Tamara Kaye Sellman, judge
Theme: "Journeys"

About the Contest:

For our Second Annual Winter Solstice Contest, we are seeking high-quality, literary fiction and nonfiction that fits with the overall mission of Cezanne's Carrot (i.e., visionary/ expansive/ spiritual/ provocative/ magical/ etc.) on the theme "Journeys." We invite submissions in three categories:

  • Short Story (1,001 to 3,000 words)
  • Flash Fiction (100 to 1,000 words)
  • Creative Nonfiction (100 to 3,000 words)

The winner of each category will be chosen by our guest judge, Tamara Kaye Sellman. Tamara is the editor of both Margin: Exploring Modern Magical Realism and Periphery Online. Among her many projects, Tamara directs MRCentral.net, a global interactive community which focuses on literary magical realism.

Winners of each category will receive a $100 prize and be published in the 2008 Winter Solstice edition of Cezanne's Carrot. All submissions to this contest will be considered for publication in that issue.

About the Theme:

Life is a journey. All of us travel many journeys in our lives—physically, spiritually, psychologically, metaphysically. For our 2008 Winter Solstice issue (which is also our fourth anniversary issue), we want to publish stories that interpret that theme in expansive, fresh ways.

We encourage you to push the theme, explore unexpected aspects, break new ground, see with new eyes—in other words, write stories related to "journeys" that fit our mission and illustrate the quote by Paul Cezanne that inspired the name of this journal: "The day is coming when a single carrot, freshly observed, will set off a revolution." We are looking for revolutionary thinking about this theme—ideas that explode the traditional concepts of the meaning of a journey.

To get a better idea of our mission and the type of work we like to publish, it's best to read the work published in our current and past isues. While your work can interpret the theme any way you like, we will look specifically for works that fit our mission of publishing "visionary" writing.
