Eggs Dancing With Stones

A poem by Lori Romero

"Eggs have no business dancing with stones."
                        ~ proverb

A wrong turn carries me far from the trailhead,
far from paved paths and ordered passages,
to where the grass surrenders with silent waves to rocky slopes,
and narrow ridges give way to root-filled climbs.
Blackbirds color in a lone cloud, crevices uncloister lizards.
Each footstep raises dust and doubt, a homily of stones.
In my intimate gait, I go on, surrounded by yellow poppies
scaling the jagged incline

This poem took shape after a meditative hike in the California mountains. I was born and raised at the base of the Colorado Rockies--so I'm a mountain girl at heart, and this geography usually inspires a poem or story. I think I first heard the quote from my grandpa Joe, and it challenged me. As Jane Hirshfield says, "I discover my questions by entering my questions."
