Milestone

A poem by Ann Iverson

When the heart is at peace
at the place of everlasting,
comes as it does
as the moon through the trees.
With light, knowledge,
mountain.

A sea of broken shadows
cast yesterday
are only deer talking
in the woods behind your heart.

Beams of darkness thrust through
the long sleeves of your life
become hands that are not empty.

Ann IversonAnn writes:
Astonished and mystified by the sounds and visions of a move to a very rural suburb, I was forced by language to devour the objects at hand: moon, deer, darkness. The surreal sights and sounds (new to a city girl) entered me and exited as a poem.
