I am born of stones

A poem by Paul Kloppenborg

I live in my bones
Broken shells on the sandy edge of things
Remembering sunlight and ocean
At least I am not alone

I am born of stones
The slow creep of moss where earth is stuck
Muscular shoulders once shifted mountains
Time is not important

Skin cools upon its touch
And bones can be crushed by hand
Days belong to one alone
To the honest air, sea and sun.

Strength to move towards death
Fish can ride the crest of waves
The creaking sound within limbs
But time is not important

Paul KloppenborgPaul writes:
I tried to use a rhythmic repeat technique of key emotional words/states to depict a sadness and re-building of re-birth. In other words, producing a commonly shared truth by metaphor, bringing together two objects of sensations (in this case, hard earth imagery of earth, stones, rock) against human elements, e.g., loneliness, birth, etc., and identifying their common quality. The reader then can identify the common linkages for their own experience. This technical aspects doesn't distract from the creative process or subject matter involved with this poem, one of movement within time or life or one of solitary reflection and transition, perhaps from walking alone along a beach and crushing shells under foot. Again, my severe pruning of the unnecessary increases the potency and, I feel, a successful poignant punch of what I saw and felt is carried to the reader.
