Kathe writes:
I first looked on the climbers of El Capitan with puzzlement. What a crazy thing to do. I came to see them differently while writing the poem. Yosemite Valley inspires awe on a grand scale. Every year visitors are drawn to it by the millions. It appeals to our spiritual nature whether we define ourselves as religious or not. Most visitors are content with a bit of easy hiking and picture taking. Others, like the climbers, are drawn into the landscape. I believe all are ultimately seeking the same feeling of transcendence.
