Of Clocks

A poem by Michael K. Gause

What do these hands know
of the passage of time?

I have watched them
fail to grasp larger moments
that have never once bothered to notice them.

To the old they’re like gods
marking the speed of the falling,
though they are the ones who will transcend the echo of now
and now.

In truth all hands envy those on the other side,
their unmeasured rhythm,
which says,
It is you who are now obsolete.
